10th Medieval Dance Course
Thursday 13 May - Sunday 16 May, 2010

with Christophe Deslignes

Saint-Bris le Vineux
Yonne - France

Rotruenge is organising the 10th Medieval Dance Course: a four-day introduction to the art of medieval dance as handed down by oral traditions. The course will take the form of various workshops led by Christophe Deslignes, as well as events and talks about historical evidence regarding medieval dance: iconography, treatises, music and chronicles. An evening of dance, open to all and featuring medieval, Renaissance and folk dances, will be held in the village "Salle des Fêtes" at 8pm on Saturday 16 May.

Aims of the course
Participants will be asked to learn about ten choreographies, using an archeological and historical method of reconstructing religious, popular, courtly and minstrel dances from the 12th to 14th centuries, with a view to both performing at and involving others in an evening of dance. The workshops will include individual tuition alongside work in pairs and groups.

The repertoire used will include:
Llibre Vermell, Cantigas de Santa Maria, conducti, dance music, London manuscript, estampies, Faenza Codex, Carmina Burana, balli by Domenico da Piacenza, French and Italian basses danses.

Types of dance will include:
Carol, tresque, virelai, rondeau, ballad, ballo, saltarello, ballata, basse danse, estampie.
